The primer is factory-tinted to coordinate with the final finish colour, reducing telegraphing of the basecoat through the thin finish coat. The silicone finish coat is applied in one continuous wet-on-wet operation across each elevation, working to natural break lines and avoiding cold joints. We apply either 1.5mm or 2mm grain size depending on the specification. The material is trowel-applied and floated to the specified texture — scratch, scraped or smooth. Silicone render is inherently flexible, breathable and hydrophobic: it sheds water rather than absorbing it, delivering a finish that stays cleaner for longer and resists cracking as the building moves seasonally.

The material is applied to a depth of 10–15mm in a single operation, working to the full height and width of each elevation without cold joints. The colour and aggregate are integral to the mix: the final appearance is achieved by the scraping process, not by any applied finish. Batch numbers are recorded and matched for consistent colour across the full elevation.
Monocouche achieves its characteristic scraped finish while the render is still 'green' — firm enough to hold its shape but not yet fully set. This is the most time-critical operation in the entire process. Too early and the surface tears; too late and the material has hardened beyond workable. Working in sequence across the elevation, the surface is scraped to remove the cement laitance layer and expose the underlying aggregate, revealing the through-colour and texture specified. Timing is judged by the operative based on conditions — a genuine craft skill that makes or breaks the outcome.

The finish coat is applied at 2–6mm over the cured float coat, using a fine sand mix gauged to the specified texture. Options include smooth steel-trowelled, wood-float, scraped or tyrolean dash. The finish coat must be applied in one continuous wet-on-wet pass per elevation to avoid joint marks. Where a painted finish is specified, the render must be allowed to fully cure and carbonate before any masonry paint is applied — painting on partially cured render traps moisture and causes premature paint failure.

The lime float coat is applied at 8–10mm over the cured scratch coat, using a slightly finer sand and NHL mix to bring the elevation to a true, level plane. Applied in a single pass per section, ruled off and wood-floated to a close texture. Lime render is highly sensitive to drying out: hessian or shade netting is often required in warm or windy weather to retain surface moisture. The slower pace of lime work reflects the material's character — it is a considered system best suited to operatives experienced with it.
The lime finish coat is applied at 3–6mm using a fine lime putty mix or proprietary pre-bagged lime finish. Options include smooth polished plaster, lightly sanded, hair-reinforced, or traditional limewash-compatible surfaces. Where the finish will be colour-washed rather than painted with a modern masonry paint, lime putty finishes develop a patina and depth over time that no synthetic coating replicates. Colour washing with a proprietary lime wash maintains the vapour permeability of the system — the recommended finish for heritage and conservation applications.
